Over the last month, more than 5.3 million hectares of Bolivian lands have gone up in flames, including some of the country’s most important places for biodiversity.

These fires directly threaten the ability of Bolivia’s protected areas and other wild lands to provide clean drinking water, store carbon, harbor wildlife and preserve the culture and livelihoods of indigenous people.

Around the world we need to implement economic policies that recognize and safeguard the value of biodiversity and that do not incentivize destructive agricultural practices, the driving force behind the fires across South America this year.
